After 15 post-art-school years of not feeling inspired to paint, not knowing what to say or how to say it, I'm starting up again. My creative energy demands an outlet! What intrigues me about art this time is the idea of communicating. Putting my experience or perception down and then finding out another's reaction to that, either similar or completely different, but always interesting. The mark of success for me in all art forms -- music, writing, films, etc.-- is when it strikes a chord or has something you recognize and respond to, on any level. Could be simply entertaining and pretty, or it could resonate with your soul. Using the blog format is an easy way to effortlessly put my work out into the world. My work is personal and inspired by people and situations around me. My goal is not to sell, show, or take the art world by storm, but to find out what I have to say and to see what you hear.
“Yeah, but what’s with the trees?” According to my latest art teacher, the subject of your work is always in some form yourself and how you relate to your environment. After landing in his class where you are encouraged to work from your imagination, I wanted a subject to work from and was drawn to trees. So voila, the tree overtly as myself or say, Rob and his dogs. It's a starting point anyway. Trees are great metaphors, but I’ll come around to the figure again at some point.
Jill is an artist, musician, wife and mother of 2 boys. Raised in Dallas and gratefully transplanted to Santa Barbara, it's not easy to fit the lastest obsession with painting in with the previous obsessions with hiking, yoga, sailing, naps, doing nothing and playing the violin.
